“The Retention Specialist Project,” a Better Jobs Better Care report addresses staffing issues

The report found that implementing a retention specialist in a long term care facility had a positive impact on job satisfaction and staffing issues. Thirty two homes participated in the study. The findings included:

• Turnover declined from 21% to 11% over the course of the year • Dedicating at least 20% of a current staff member’s time to retention, providing them with training and resources, and making the program part of an ongoing effort rather than a one-time fix can improve job satisfaction and increase retention.
