State Passes Nursing Home Legislation which Highlights Financial Protection

A state has developed a pill to prevent the financial exploitation of senior citizens. The bill is called the Elder Abuse Protection Plan which is meant to address a surge in elder abuse complaints. The bill makes financially exploiting a vulnerable adult a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. It also calls for children who abuse, neglect or exploit their aging parents to be disinherited. Third parties would be able to file criminal complaints to stop and prevent abuse cases in nursing homes. By allowing anyone to file complaints for elder abuse, hopefully the amount of undocumented elder abuse cases will diminish. Illinois should consider developing legislation that is specifically tailored to meet the increase in financial exploitation of seniors.
