Levin & Perconti Partners Chosen as Influential Leaders in Legal Profession
Levin & Perconti partners Margaret Battersby Black and Mike Bonamarte have been separately acknowledged for their work as leading attorneys in Illinois. Battersby Black has been nominated for her rising influence as a woman in the legal field and named to Crains Notable Women list for 2020. And, Bonamarte has been asked to join the Illinois State Bar Association’s steering committee on racial inequity.
In 2020, also Battersby Black and Bonamarte joined Levin & Perconti partners Steven Levin, John Perconti, and Susan Novosad for achieving the notable 2020 Illinois Super Lawyer title. The attorneys were recognized for individual and team work representing clients in medical malpractice and personal injury cases, including nursing home abuse and neglect. Bonamarte and Battersby Black were previously honored by the Super Lawyers Rising Stars program for early-career lawyers, multiple times.
Margaret Battersby Black: Crains Chicago Notable Women List
Through a nomination process to make Crains Chicago Notable Women List, Levin & Perconti partner Margaret Battersby Black was selected to join a group of 124 women attorneys noted for expanding roles as leaders in their field and as female mentors. Battersby Black has become known for her work on behalf of victims of nursing home negligence throughout Illinois and secured multiple million-dollar settlements for Levin & Perconti’s clients. She has also been integral to building the Trial Lawyers Association’s Women’s Caucus and its ongoing success. And her mentorship of younger lawyers at Levin & Perconti, through the Women’s Bar Association and her alma mater, Chicago-Kent College of Law, has not gone unnoticed.
Crains says the women on this year’s list are also “reaching beyond their firms to support young girls, law school students, asylum seekers, and disabled people, and they are pushing to do more to promote racial justice and equality.”
Many of the women who made this year’s list were also praised for their skillful adaptation to a “new normal” due to the coronavirus pandemic, whether by delivering an oral argument remotely, arranging socially distanced document signings, or navigating office closings.
Battersby Black has also played a vital role in many nursing home and medical malpractice cases that made national news headlines. Her voice has helped raise nationwide awareness about the issues related to chronic nursing home abuse and neglect. In 2019, she sat first chair in more than 20 of Levin & Perconti’s 58 cases.
“Our deepest appreciation to the law firm of Levin & Perconti, and in particular to Margaret Battersby Black, in the handling of the lawsuit we filed on behalf of our sister who sustained life-threatening injuries as a nursing home resident. Margaret’s representation, guidance, and professionalism gave us the sense that we could put our trust in Levin & Perconti, and the final outcome proved that to be true. We were able to reach settlement, with Margaret advising us all the way. We sincerely thank you all for your expertise in bringing this case to a mutually positive close, and we would highly recommend using Levin & Perconti to anyone who is looking for a quality law firm.” – Nursing Home Client
To qualify for the Crains list, the attorneys must be serving in senior-level roles at a law firm and have practiced at least ten years. They must have shown the ability to effect change in their roles or practice areas, serve as role models, and have assumed leadership positions in professional or civic organizations.
Michael F. Bonamarte IV: Illinois State Bar Association Committee on Racial Inequity
The Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) has selected Levin & Perconti partner Michael F. Bonamarte IV to serve on the ISBA committee focused on racial inequity. Bonamarte is also a member of the ISBA’s Young Lawyers Division Council.
A skilled and passionate attorney, Bonamarte has achieved record-breaking results in several high-profile nursing home, wrongful death, medical malpractice, and personal injury cases in Illinois. His commitment to his clients is rooted in a family legacy of love of the law and meaningful service to those in need to help repair painful injustices.
“He was extremely resourceful and diligent in his efforts to identify witnesses and to solicit their testimony. He was very personable and made me feel as if he really cares about my Mother and the wrong done to her. I was very comfortable with his demeanor and feel he represented us as well as could be done. He represented your firm extremely well. I would recommend your firm to anyone requiring representation.” – Wrongful Death Client
Bonamarte is the immediate Past Chair of The American Association for Justice’s Nursing Home Litigation Group, and along with partner John Perconti, secured one of the firm’s top overall cases. The $12 million jury verdict was won for the family of an elderly woman after a health system failed to diagnose and treat her lung cancer which led to her untimely death. He is also a member of the Chicago Bar Association, American Bar Association, Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, and the Justinian Society of Lawyers and served on the River North Business Association board.
Congratulations to Margaret Battersby Black and Michael Bonamarte for frequently exceeding Levin & Perconti’s expectations and earning accolades and roles that will continue to support, build, and influence the legal profession.
