Nursing Home Blamed for Negligence in Woman’s Infection, Death

A nursing home is required to provide quality care for our loved ones in their later years. All too often, however, nursing home negligence causes harm or even death to someone we love. A recent neglect lawsuit was filed by Levin & Perconti for the estate administrator of a woman who died. The woman had been residing in BRIA Health Services LLC where she allegedly developed a severe infection and died as a result. According to the information, the nursing home staff was negligent in her care and allowed her condition to deteriorate. The lawsuit names the nursing home along with Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center alleging negligence and wrongful death.

Nursing Home Injuries

Nursing home injuries are more common than most people realize. Thousands of nursing home residents are been hurt or have died every year due to the negligent actions at a nursing home. Some of the most frequent nursing home injuries occur due to falls, medication mistakes, or bedsores. These are all issues that can and should be prevented. When the care workers do not take proper care of residents the result can be devastating. Nursing home neglect and abuse often go unreported.

Serious Infections

Elderly individuals are more susceptible to medical problems and cannot always fight off infections as easily as younger people. As a result, when an older person suffers an infection it can progress quickly and may actually lead to death, as in this case. One of the most common reasons for infection in nursing home residents is the presence of bedsores. Bedsores, also called pressure ulcers, start as painful red marks that occur in areas where the skin comes into frequent contact with bedding. The sores can quickly worsen and once the skin breaks it easily gets infected. The infection is usually hard to treat and it can spread throughout the body.

Prevention of Nursing Home Injuries

Injuries in nursing homes are preventable. Nursing home staff must be properly trained and managed. There needs to be adequate staffing to adequately provide care for the patients. It is important to know that many nursing home residents do not report problems with neglect or abuse. It is up to the relatives to make sure that their loved one is being cared for properly. If any signs of neglect are noticed it is necessary to seek medical treatment immediately and report the situation.

Nursing Home Neglect Lawsuit

Nursing home abuse and neglect are serious problems. If it happens to your parent or relative it may be necessary to file a lawsuit. A nursing home neglect lawsuit can help recover the costs of medical expenses caused by the injury. In this case, the woman died as a result of the injuries. The lawsuit likely seeks damages that may include compensation for pain and suffering and for loss of enjoyment of life.
