Neglectful Care Caused Nursing Home Death, Lawsuit Filed

Levin & Perconti attorneys have been chosen to represent the wrongful death case of a man who died due to neglectful care in a nursing home. The lawsuit names Manor Care of Palos Heights West, Illinois and affiliated companies including Manorcare Health Services, LLC doing business as HCR Manorcare, LLC, and Heartland Employment Services, LLC. The lawsuit cites that insufficient measures were taken to prevent injuries and that negligence led to the man’s death.

Deterioration of Health

Many factors can contribute to the deterioration of an elderly person’s health. One of the most common problems that may occur in nursing homes is the development of pressure sores. These pressure sores, also called pressure ulcers or bedsores, begin as small red marks in places where the body is in constant contact with the bed linens. The sores can quickly worsen, especially when they are not immediately treated. Pressure sores are an indication that inadequate care is being provided. These ulcers should not be allowed to develop because the patient should be repositioned more often.

Inadequate Treatment

Nursing homes are under a duty to provide proper care and treatment to patients. When a patient is in need of medical treatment it must be sought without delay. Unfortunately, nursing home staff or management may not always be properly trained or may not have an adequate number of trained employees to handle the needs of their residents. Improper supervision is to blame for this man’s health decline and ultimate death in the nursing facility.

Pressure Sore Treatment Plan

Although pressure sores should be prevented, once they occur an aggressive treatment plan must be established. This should be done under the supervision of the patient’s physician. The pressure sores should be checked several times per day and the prescribed treatment performed. When pressure sores first begin they are painful red marks and further contact with sheets must be prevented in those areas. As they progress, bedsores deepen, the skin breaks open, and an infection is difficult to avoid. That is why it is essential to notice and care for pressure sores as quickly as possible.

Nursing Home Neglect

There are many circumstances that may be considered neglectful in nursing homes. Falls, malnutrition, pressure ulcers, and fractured bones may all be signs of neglect. When a loved one is the victim of nursing home neglect it can seriously impact their quality of life and may be the catalyst for a spiral decline in health. That is what reportedly occurred in this instance. The man suffered from pressure ulcers that ultimately caused his overall health to worsen. If your loved one suffered an injury due to neglect in a nursing home you may be entitled to compensation. The damages include such items as medical expenses and money for pain and suffering, among other things.
