According to the Chicago Tribune, a jury recently handed down a verdict against a nursing home in a lawsuit filed following a tragic death of one of its residents.
Following the trial a jury ordered Friendship ManorCare of Grinell to pay $546,000 to the estate of a former resident. In June of last year the 89-year old victim was being transported to a nearby hospital to have tests run. He was put on a gurney and wheeled toward an ambulance waiting outside the nursing home. However, the employees were not very careful when moving the gurney. They failed to notice the quality of the sidewalk that they were pushing the man upon. Eventually one of the gurney wheels dropped into a crack on the sidewalk. This caused the wheeled bed to flip over and the man to come crashing onto the sidewalk.
The nursing home victim’s head struck the pavement hard in this fall. He slipped into a coma and died shortly after.
Our Chicago nursing home attorneys at Levin & Perconti have handled a number of cases involving ManorCare. In one case we won a $2.9 million jury award on behalf of a family against a ManorCare facility in Homewood. In that instance the nursing home was negligent while handling a 57-year old resident’s tracheotomy tube leading to his suffocation death.
Unfortunately, these facilities continue to harm patients with their inadequate care. Just two weeks ago our nursing home lawyers filed suit again against a ManorCare facility in Elk Grove Village for a 76-year old resident who was injured followed poor care by nursing home staff members. The woman was at the facility for only a little over a month before falling while attempting to get into her wheelchair. Nursing home employees knew that the victim was a fall risk, because she was actually at the facility to recover from surgery following a fall at home. Yet, the home still failed to properly transfer the resident from her bed to her wheelchair in a proper manner, leading to several broken bones and a long delay in her recovery. She now lives at home with care provided by her husband.
If you or a loved one has suffered at one of these facilities, be sure to hold the negligent parties accountable.
