Levin & Perconti File Negligence Lawsuit Against Three Nursing Homes

Nursing homes are required to provide proper care and supervision for all of their residents. Keeping patients safe should be a number one priority for nursing home facilities across the country. Yet sometimes they fail to properly care for our elderly relatives. A recent lawsuit was filed by Levin & Perconti on behalf of the estate administrator of a woman who died as a result of alleged nursing home neglect. The lawsuit, filed in Cook County, seeks damages of more than $50,000 and names three nursing facilities.

Nursing Home Neglect

Nursing home neglect is a large problem and one that often goes unreported. Nursing home residents often do not report the neglectful care because they are afraid to do so. Other times they may be unable to properly communicate the problems or may not even understand what has occurred. These issues face our elderly in nursing homes everywhere. Nursing homes are required under the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act to provide residents the necessary care and supervision they require, regardless of their physical or mental condition. In this case, the lawsuit alleges that the nursing facilities failed to properly care for the woman, allowing serious pressure sores to develop and deteriorate.

Pressure Ulcers in the Elderly

Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, are a common problem, particularly in the elderly and those who are bedridden. Bedsores can develop on the skin in areas that are often in contact with the sheets or other items. Continual rubbing happens when the patient is unable to move around or change position. The care providers should be moving the person to ensure that bedsores do not develop. If a bedsore begins it must be quickly noticed and medically treated. Bedsores can be painful and they may worsen very fast, making them dangerous.

Serious Infections

Pressure ulcers are categorized into four types based on their progressive deterioration. At first, pressure ulcers are red marks that may be warm to the touch and very painful. If left untreated and if the rubbing continues, they can worsen. The skin will eventually break open and the wound will deepen. Some sores can reach all the way to the tendons or bone. Open wounds such as these are hard to treat and very often an infection develops. Infections can turn to sepsis, an infection that spreads throughout the body and into the organs. Sepsis in the elderly is quite often fatal. In this case, the woman suffered a serious infection because of bedsores that were not prevented or treated.
