State inspection found nursing home abuse and neglect at Milwaukee home

Mount Carmel is the largest home in Wisconsin and was recently inspected by the state for nursing home abuse and neglect. The facility was cited for 16 federal violations and was found to have given substandard care in the ‘quality of life for residents’ category. One 88-year-old man was found moaning and crying in pain while being ignored by the staff. His aide was supervising 15 residents, illustrating the understaffing problems at the home. Aides failed to answer call lights, check for incontinence, and investigate abuse and neglect allegations while expired medications were found on treatment carts. The home is owned by Kindred Health Care but is run by Benedictine Health Systems. Both Kindred, a for-profit national chain, and Benedictine, a not-for-profit organization, have nursing homes and other long-term care facilities in Illinois and the Chicago area.
