McLean County Nursing Homes Face New Wave of COVID Infections
Community spread of the coronavirus is the biggest threat to long-term care facilities. And now, news of a third wave of COVID-19 infections is again concerning communities with elder care facilities such as nursing homes, group homes, and skilled nursing communities. In McLean County, 9 of those facilities are experiencing cases on an upward trend, including three outbreaks, with the largest at a large assisted living facility in Bloomington. At the Bickford House, located at 14 Heartland Drive, there are 36 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and two reported deaths.
Elder care facilities in McLean County that have had cases within the last 28 days include:
- Aperion Care Bloomington: 4 cases and no deaths
- Bickford House of Bloomington: 36 cases and 2 deaths
- Heritage Health of Normal: 16 cases and 1 death
- The Lofts Rehab and Nursing of Normal: 11 cases and 1 death
- The Villas of Holly Brook, Bloomington: 3 cases
- The Villas of Holly Brook-Towanda Barnes, Bloomington: 17 cases and 1 death
- Marcfirst, Bloomington: 8 cases
- McLean County Nursing Home, Normal: 6 cases
- Westminster Village/Martin Healthcare, Bloomington: 6 cases
McLean County Health Department Administrator Jessica McKnight told Illinois media that the increase in cases at long-term care facilities began in September, a similar finding by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Although deaths among residents have slowed, the CMS data shows weekly nationwide nursing home cases became elevated again in late September for the first time in seven weeks. The Illinois Department of Public Health reports more than 32,000 cases in nursing homes and long-term care facilities and nearly 5,000 resident and staff deaths since March.
Poor Care Quality Plays a Role in COVID Infections

We are currently investigating hundreds of complaints involving assisted living, long-term care, and skilled nursing facilities which have failed to uphold adequate safeguards related to the COVID-19 outbreak in the greater Chicago area and surrounding communities in Illinois.
