Attorney Steve Levin Profiled by Leading Lawyers

One of the founding partners at our firm, Attorney Steve Levin, was recently the subject of an extensive profile in Leading Lawyers Magazine. The piece discussed Steve’s family background, early legal history, and various issues that drive his legal work on behalf of injured clients today.

Steve has deep roots in this part of the country, having grown up in Skokie, Illinois. He had two siblings. His mother worked with the family at home while he father pursued various job, often in sales. In fact, Steve met his wife in elementary school in Skokie. Counting their time dating on and off, the couple have been together for almost fifty years; they have four adult children and eleven grandchildren
Legal History
Steve graduated from Loyola University School of Law in the mid-70s and began work as a defense attorney in criminal law cases. Beginning in the criminal defense world, Levin immediately gained extensive trial experience, advocating for clients even under the toughest of circumstances.

After a few years with his firm, Steven eventually started his own practice. Initially he focused only on criminal defense but soon decided that the civil law might be a better long-term fit. Eventually he and his sister, Levin & Perconti Attorney Susan Novosad, formed a new practice focusing solely on civil law, representing injured community members. The firm merged with the practice of Attorney John Perconti a few years later, creating the Levin & Perconti firm that thrives today.

Reputation as Elder Care Giant
While Steve has worked on many different types of cases over the years, in his many decades of practice he has become particularly known for his pioneering work on cases involving nursing home abuse and neglect. Before Levin began work on nursing home injury cases, few other attorneys pursued these matters. But, thanks to Steve’s aggressive advocacy, over the last three decades more and more advocates in Illinois have vindicated resident rights under the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act.

In fact, Attorney Levin has become such a “giant” in the field of law that acronyms are used to apply his unique approach to these cases. A colleague who practices similar neglect cases out in New Jersey explained how he gives his own presentations on “Levinning” a witness. It refers to a special way to use witnesses in nursing home cases in comprehensive ways to explain how a facility functions and, at times, reveal obvious deficiencies in care provided to residents.

Through it all, perhaps Steve’s best attribute is his rock-solid commitment to the community members he represents. One former client, whose brother suffered neglect at a long-term care facility explained, “He’s a family man. I think he brings that to the table. He sees things as they would affect his own family.”
