She was recovering from a medical procedure; however, the wound was not properly cared for and became infected. Ultimately, the wound became infected and the woman died as a result. The lawsuit is seeking damages of more than $50,000.
Nursing Home Neglect
Nursing homes are supposed to be safe facilities where we trust our loved ones will be properly cared for. Unfortunately, sometimes a nursing home fails and the result is harm or even death to our loved ones. In this case, the nursing home staff was required to appropriately care for the woman’s wound, causing it to become severely infected. The elderly are susceptible to infections so it is of the utmost importance that every precaution is taken to keep wounds clean and cared for. Once an infection begins it is necessary to seek medical attention immediately. In this instance that was likely not done.
Nursing Home Care
Nursing homes must provide high quality care to all residents. The Illinois Nursing Home Care Act is legislation in place to protect residents from harm while residing in care facilities. The act sets forth specific rules that must be followed to ensure that proper care is provided.
Additionally, nursing homes need to have specific procedures in place so that employees know how to handle every possible situation. In this instance, the staff did not take adequate care of the woman’s wound, causing it to become infected. The infection worsened and the woman’s health seriously declined until she died.
Problems in Nursing Homes
Generally, nursing homes provide sufficient care to patients. However, sometimes even the best care facilities are negligent. Negligent care can be caused by various factors that include poor management, inadequate employee training, and not enough staff. For example, the facility may be understaffed, a common situation in nursing homes. Understaffing causes care workers to rush their care and even to eliminate some important steps in care giving. Cutting corners may not always cause serious injuries, but sometimes it does.
Nursing Home Neglect Lawsuit
Nursing home neglect is serious and if it happens to your loved one it can be devastating. When a nursing home is neglectful the victim or his family could be owed money for damages. In this case, the woman’s wounds were allowed to become infected, ultimately causing her death. Compensation could include money for medical treatment, pain and suffering, and for loss of enjoyment of life. You may also be entitled to legal expenses. Any nursing home abuse or neglect should not be tolerated. If your loved one was harmed or died because of nursing home neglect or abuse, contact Levin & Perconti for a consultation.
