Levin & Perconti Represent Victim in Nursing Home Neglect Case

Levin & Perconti has been chosen to represent the estate of a woman who died due to alleged nursing home neglect. The woman was a resident at Alden Valley Ridge Rehabilitation & Health Care Center when she fell and developed pressure ulcers. The injuries led to her death. The lawsuit states that the nursing home failed to provide proper care and was negligent. The plaintiff is seeking damages of more than $50,000 in a lawsuit filed in Cook County.

Nursing Home Neglect

Nursing home neglect consists of many different actions or lack of actions. When a nursing home accepts a patient into their facility they agree to provide proper care at all times. When they fail to properly supervise a resident it may result in injuries. Falls are likely the most common reason for injuries in nursing homes. When an elderly patient falls they may sustain broken bones and fractures more easily than a younger person. Serious injuries from falls may require medical treatment including surgery.

Nursing Home Care Act

The Illinois Nursing Home Care Act is legislation that is designed to protect nursing home residents from abuse and neglect. Nursing homes are required to provide adequate care according to the rules and guidelines set forth in the legislation. The failure to do so is a violation. Unfortunately, many nursing homes have been guilty of providing neglectful care, even with these laws in place. Sometimes the patients are not seriously hurt in the incident, so it is not reported. However, many serious injuries have occurred at nursing homes all across the Chicago area.

Pressure Sores

Pressure sores, also called bedsore or pressure ulcers, can be very serious. Once they form, bedsores can quickly deteriorate and break the skin. Once the skin breaks open, an infection is likely, which can be difficult to treat. The formation of bedsores is usually a sign of neglect. The patient is not being properly repositioned and is unable to do so on his own. A bedsore needs to be immediately noted and a medical treatment plan must be established. The patient must be vigilantly supervised to ensure that the sore does not worsen and that new sores do not appear. In this case, the woman’s bedsores were not promptly noticed or adequately treated and they worsened.
