Negligence Blamed for Woman’s Death at Medical Facility

When we are being treated at a hospital or medical facility we expect that we will receive proper care and that our condition will improve, rather than worsening. In one recent case, a woman died after allegedly receiving improper treatment at a medical facility. The woman’s daughter has filed a lawsuit against Metrosouth Medical Center in Blue Island and is represented by Levin & Perconti. According to the lawsuit, the facility’s negligence caused the woman’s death.

Fall Caused Serious Injury

The woman was a patient, being treated for slurred speech and a weakness on her right side. Several days after her arrival, the woman fell while in her room. The fall was quite serious and she sustained a hip fracture as a result. This injury drastically reduced her mobility and while she was bedridden she developed pressure ulcers. The pressure ulcers likely became infected, causing additional pain and trauma. All of these issues contributed to her death, according to the lawsuit.

Failure to Supervise

Staff and caregivers at medical and nursing facilities are required to provide adequate supervision to ensure the sure the safety of patients. When proper care is not provided, mistakes and accidents may occur, as in this case. The lawsuit alleges that the facility was negligent in several areas. They failed to assess the woman’s condition and did not implement a care plan to accommodate her medical requirements. They did not provide devices to assist the woman, and did not take the proper preventative measures to avoid injuries.

In cases such as this one, the staff members failed to do their jobs and were neglectful of their duties. While medical malpractice is about making mistakes, neglect is about failing to do what is expected. The caregivers allowed the woman to fall and this caused a hip fracture. Because of reduced mobility, the staff knew that the woman was at an increased risk for the development of bedsores. Care providers should have been adjusting the woman’s position more often in order to keep her from getting sores. Instead, they failed to do so, and bedsores developed, which worsened over time.

Medical Issues

The elderly are more susceptible to some types of injuries and medical problems than those who are younger. Falls are the number one cause of serious injuries in the elderly. The woman in this instance fractured her hip, which ultimately led to her declining health and well being. Bedsores are painful and can cause serious and fatal infections, especially in older individuals. The care providers caused the initial injury through lack of supervision, and then were further negligent by improperly treating the woman, causing her to suffer pressure ulcers. It is important to note that in most situations, the presence of bedsores could be an indication of neglect. The woman’s daughter is seeking damages in the lawsuit to cover the woman’s medical expenses, as well as compensation for the loss of companionship as well as grief and sorrow.
