Nursing Home Negligence Blamed for Resident’s Death

A nursing home resident died as a result of injuries suffered after she fell. The woman later died from her injuries. A lawsuit has been filed in Cook County on behalf of the woman’s estate claiming negligence led to her death. The woman was a resident of Glen Oaks Nursing & Rehabilitation Centre Ltd. located in Northbrook, IL where the negligence and injuries took place. The lawsuit seeks damages of more than $50,000 as well a legal fees associated with the case.

Nursing Home Falls

Nursing home falls occur quite frequently. The CDC, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, estimates that about 1,800 nursing home residents die each year due to injuries from a fall. Unfortunately, serious injuries can result from falls, especially in the elderly. The woman in this case reportedly suffered a serious head bruise and a broken hip after falling in her nursing home. The woman’s broken hip required surgery and she died soon thereafter.

Failure to Provide Supervision

Falls can happen more frequently to the elderly for a number of reasons. They may be taking medication that makes them unsteady, they may be in pain, or could be recovering from a medical procedure. Whatever the reason, the elderly must be closely monitored to protect them from falling. Nursing homes are under a legal obligation to ensure the safety of their residents. The woman in this instance was apparently not properly supervised. The woman fell and suffered serious injuries during a period of lack of supervision.

Help with Daily Activities

Many nursing home residents are unable to care for themselves without help. The nursing home is required to provide the assistance and monitoring needed to help people take care of their daily activities. It is important to note that the needs of each resident may change over time as they become older, weaker, or less able to care for themselves. The nursing home must take care of the needs of all residents, regardless of their particular level of requirements. This is according to the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act. This lawsuit states that the nursing home violated this act and caused the woman’s death because of their negligence.

Nursing Home Neglect

Nursing home neglect is a problem that occurs all too frequently. Falls should not happen and are almost always preventable. When a fall occurs it is usually a sign that the nursing home was neglectful. While not all falls cause serious injuries, sometimes they do, as in this case. The nursing home staff did not provide the supervision required to help the patient stand or walk. This can occur when the nursing home is not properly staffed or when the caregivers are not trained. The nursing home management must have schedules and procedures in place to ensure that the needs of every resident are met. In this case, the woman’s fall ultimately led to her death.
