Surprise inspection finds rampant neglect in nursing home

When a New Jersey senator recently conducted a surprise inspection of the New Vista Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Newark, he was astonished at the nursing home’s unsanitary conditions, lack of assistance to residents, and overall culture of neglect. Several of the residents’ rooms were excessively hot, with temperatures measuring into the mid-80s. Multiple residents who needed assistance to eat were clearly not receiving any. This meant that, after their attempts to feed themselves were in vain, the neglect of the staff and their failures to check on residents as required left residents to lie covered in spilled food. Or worse, food was being left uneaten at their bedsides. Additionally, the state senator’s inspection found the New Vista Nursing and Rehabilitation Center’s facilities generally unsanitary, in some instances with toilet seats being found on the floor of the bathroom. Upon viewing the conditions of the nursing home, the state senator commented, “This is a disgrace. This should be closed.”
