Nursing home neglect leads to manslaughter charge

A Massachussets nursing home has been indicted for manslaughter when workers failed to ensure that a resident was properly monitored. The resident wheeled herself into a stairwell and ultimately fell to her death. The Attorney General considered this neglect to be criminally reckless because the nursing home knew that the resident had a tendency to leave without supervision. Five years prior to her fatal accident, the resident was found unattended in the foyer of the nursing home. At that point, doctors ordered that the resident be given a device that would monitor the resident's movement and send a warning alert to staff if she left a designated area. However, the nursing home only managed to keep the device on the resident for three months, and it was this failure to comply with doctors orders that led to the resident not being outfitted with a monitoring device on the day of her wrongful death.
